There is a trend taking classrooms on SCSU’s campus by storm—it may even be classified as a plague. You see, there is something severely wrong with the desks in many of the academic buildings, mainly in Engleman Hall. It started out in just a few classrooms, but the desks have multiplied and are now all over the building. You must know the desks I’m talking about—first floor of Engleman is where they are most populous. They’re the grayish-white right-hand and left-hand half desktops attached on one side to a maroon chair. And they’re mighty uncomfortable. The peculiar thing is these desks were made in such a way that no matter how strategically you place your belongings, they will inevitably begin to slide down in a matter of moments.

I am writing in response to Bryan Laudano's opinion article printed in the April 25 edition, page 6, titled "News isn't newsworthy." I don't pretend to be any sort of writer. I am becoming aware of this in my English 112 class, where writing has been a nightmare for me. Despite this, I know how to read well. We understand that the Fireplace Lounge is meant to be the representation of the new Student Center, but when a single group of students is being placed under blame in an area that is open to the public for use by all of the university, it’s simply disgraceful.

The one medium that does tend to overplay violent acts is television. Whenever a tragedy or violent act happens, there is so much speculation on news talk shows as to what happened and why. The show usually features a couple of “experts” who are more than willing to offer their opinions as to why and how things unfold. In the case of extreme situations, like the Oklahoma City bombing, the Columbine High School massacre and the Virginia Tech shootings, the news media dragged their coverage out to the point where it became numbing.

The thought of a student going on a campus-killing spree never crossed my mind; at least, not until this past week. Nothing hits home harder to a college student than hearing about tragic death on campus.

1. On the past couple of dates I been on, the girls don’t seem interested. The worse part is that I have to carry on the conversations. Any advice on what else I can do? I feel I am not a boring type of guy.
